About The Regiment

Historical

The 71st Regiment of foot was raised within Inverness, Stirling and Glasgow by Lieutenant-General Simon Fraser. It was formed for the very purpose in fighting in the American War for Independence. Upon its formation it was given the number "71st". After its formation it was immediately deployed to the Americas under General Howe at Staten Island. It saw its first action at the Battle of Long Island in August of 1776 taking only 14 casualties in combat. It was then present at the Battle for Fort Washington and subsequently at the battle of Fort Lee. The regiment served in the Philadelphia campaign and so saw action at the Battle of Brandywine. The regiment would also sea action in the south with contingents being present the capture of Savannah and battle of Brier Creek. It would later prove victorious during the siege of Savannah when it successfully defended the city from attack. The regiment also served at the Siege of Charleston, Battle of Camden and the Battle of Cowpens. It served in battle one last time at Guildford Court House before it was stood down under Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown. During the post war reorganization of the British Army the 71st was disbanded, however a different highland regiment would later take the name. The 71st Glasgow Highlanders would serve as the only highland light infantry regiment, and would go on to serve in India, The Iberian Peninsula, Waterloo and Crimea before its final merger into the Highland Light Infantry in 1881.
